Losing a friend, gaining a perspective

An experience or event that changes someone can sometimes be very powerful. This was my experience as I lost an old friend of mine earlier this year. We both went to different high schools, but every day after school sophomore year, I would meet my friend Calvin at the gym.

Calvin worked his ass off in everything he did. When there was time to play, Calvin was working hard at the gym or elsewhere. He entered the Navy after graduation, and served until this winter. When I found out he died it was a hard time for me, and his wake was even harder.

A few months later my mom informed me that we are selling the house that I grew up in since I was born. At first I was upset, but I realized that everyone in my family was still alive. Even in these tough economic times, everyone still had their health. I hated losing Calvin, and I am thankful that everyone in my family is here. It taught me to appreciate what is really important in life.

R.I.P. Calvin
